How to Create a Migration Map in ArcGIS Pro (9:00am - 12:00pm) Cost $00.00 - Teacher: John Nelson, ESRI

Format: In-Person, Cambridge A and B

In this workshop we will be making a migration map in ArcGIS Pro. Is it important that we all make a dynamite animal migration map? No way. What this is really about is sneaking in a bunch of independently practical tips and tricks for working with publicly available data, geoprocessing, cartography, layouts, and easily sharable formats. What happens if you don't finish in the workshop's allotted time? No problem, you'll have a document with all the steps and links so you can work on it later at your convenience. Will you learn a lot? I don't know, but I'm confident you'll learn at least a little. Will you have fun? That's entirely up to you but I'll be having fun and I hope you successfully convince yourself later that you had fun. Should you deviate from the tutorial and try different data sources and cartographic symbology and creative alternative layout arrangements? Gosh, that would be cool, just know that going off road has its own risks like getting lost or rolling over. But that's when we learn the most.

Bring your own laptop and ArcGIS account. There aren't any special extensions or advanced license types required.

John Nelson is a map maker, software experience designer, and writer at Esri creating fringe geographic data, curious web experiences, marginally educational blogs, and debatably instructional videos. He works in a small woodshed in Michigan and relishes the opportunity to chat with other map folks.

Harnessing Tools for Population Analysis in the Volunteer State (1:00pm - 5:00pm) Cost $00.00 - Teacher: Tim Kuhn, TN State Data Center

Format: In-Person, Room TBD

This workshop explores population data about Tennessee including population estimates and projections. It also delves into the rich characteristic data captured in the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Important background, best practices and technical information about the products ensures you’re providing high-quality statistics for your organization. Those data sources are the backdrop for the workshop’s second focus: tools that can be used to access, extract, and transform these publicly available data. This includes locating files, using web-based interfaces to query them and the Census Bureau Application Programming Interface (API) to craft precision data extracts. Microsoft’s Power Query, available through Excel and Power BI, will be used throughout to access local and web-based data sources and to prepare it for analysis or use in other applications. This is a low/no code workshop suitable for analysts and researchers of all skill levels.

Participants should bring a laptop running a version of Excel for Microsoft Office, preferably Office 365 on PC. Mac users will be provided with an alternate method for accessing online data sources. Laptop must be able to connect to the Internet on available Wi-Fi. Participants will receive a hard copy of classroom exercise materials for use during the training. They will also retain access to all presentation slides and training materials on the TNSDC Population Bootcamp Training Site.

Tim Kuhn is Director of the Tennessee State Data Center and a research associate at the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee. He oversees outreach and dissemination of Census-related materials to government, academic, and business users in the state.
